Avoid taking antacids with this since the absorption of this drug can be affected. Wait at least 2 hours after taking this medication before taking an antacid. Shake the suspension well before using. Depending on child's weight, the usual dose to be taken on the first day for the treatment of an ear infection is 1, 1.5 or 2 teaspoonsful followed by half of that amount on days 2 through 5. Depending on the child's weight the usual dose for treating a throat infection can range from 0.5 to 2.5 teaspoonsful each day for 5 days. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Do this by taking the medication at the same time of the day on each day of treatment. Continue to take ZITHROMAX until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow and may result in a relapse of the infection.Zithromax (Azithromycin) DescriptionTo reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of ZITHROMAX (azithromycin) and other bacterial drugs, ZITHROMAX (azithromycin) should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.ZITHROMAX (azithromycin tablets and azithromycin for oral suspension) contain the active ingredient azithromycin, an azalide, a subclass of macrolide antibiotics, for oral administration. Azithromycin has the chemical name (2R,3S,4R,5R,8R, 10R,11R,12S,13S,14R)- 13-[(2,6-dideoxy-3-C-methyl-3-O-methyl-α-L-ribo-hexopyranosyl) oxy]-2-ethyl-3,4,10-trihydroxy-3,5,6,8,10,12,14-heptamethyl-11-[[3,4,6-trideoxy-3-(dimethylamino)-β-D-xylo-hexopyranosyl]oxy]-1-oxa-6-azacyclopentadecan-15-one. Azithromycin is derived from erythromycin; however, it differs chemically from erythromycin in that a methyl-substituted nitrogen atom is incorporated into the lactone ring. Its molecular formula is C38H72N2O12, and its molecular weight is 749.00. Azithromycin has the following structural formula:Azithromycin, as the dihydrate, is a white crystalline powder with a molecular formula of C38H72N2O12•2H2O and a molecular weight of 785.0.ZITHROMAX is supplied for oral administration as film-coated, modified capsular shaped tablets containing azithromycin dihydrate equivalent to either 250 mg or 500 mg azithromycin and the following inactive ingredients: dibasic calcium phosphate anhydrous, pregelatinized starch, sodium croscarmellose, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, hypromellose, lactose, titanium dioxide, triacetin and D&C Red #30 aluminum lake.ZITHROMAX for oral suspension is supplied in bottles containing azithromycin dihydrate powder equivalent to 300 mg, 600 mg, 900 mg, or 1200 mg azithromycin per bottle and the following inactive ingredients: sucrose; sodium phosphate, tribasic, anhydrous; hydroxypropyl cellulose; xanthan gum; FD&C Red #40; and spray dried artificial cherry, creme de vanilla and banana flavors. After constitution, each 5 mL of suspension contains 100 mg or 200 mg of azithromycin.Zithromax (Azithromycin) PrescriptionZithromax is a macrolide antibiotic that interferes with the growth of bacterial cells. Instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the doses. For more information contact your health care physician.Zithromax (Azithromycin) Missed DosesIf you miss a dose of Zithromax, take it as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose. Instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the doses. For more information contact your health care physician.Zithromax (Azithromycin) StorageMay store Zithromax in refrigerator or at room temperature (41 to 86 degrees F or 5 to 30 degrees C). Discard after 10 days.Single Dose Zithromax (Azithromycin for Oral Suspension)One dose of Zithromax delivers effective treatment for Acute Otitis Media (AOM).Single Dose Zithromax Oral Suspension (30 mg/kg) is indicated for AOM in children 6 months and older due to Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pneumoniae.Single Dose Zithromax oral suspension provides efficacy comparable with 20 doses of Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium) in one dose. In a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, multicenter study, a group of 321 children with AOM, aged 6 months to 12 years, received Zithromax oral suspension (30 mg/kg on day 1) or Augmentin oral suspension (45 mg/kg in equal doses for 10 days). Among 321 children evaluable at the end of therapy (day 12-16), Zithromax and Augmentin showed comparable overall clinical success* rates at the end of therapy, day 12-16 (87% and 88%, respectively), as well as at test of cure, day 28-32 (75% and 75%, respectively). Zithromax also demonstrated comparable efficacy to Augmentin in the subset of children aged 6 months to 2 years, both at the end of therapy, day 12-16 (78% and 80%, respectively), and at test of cure, day 28-32 (64% and 57%, respectively). In a noncomparative clinical and microbiologic trial, 240 evaluable children aged 6 months to 12 years with culture-positive AOM received a single dose of Zithromax oral suspension (30 mg/kg on day 1), and bacteriologic response rate by pathogen was assessed at the end of therapy (day 10). The results demonstrated favorable response rates against key AOM pathogens at day 10 as well as day 24-28: Streptococcus pneumoniae (92% and 88%, respectively), Haemophilus influenzae (71% and 64%, respectively), and Moraxella catarrhalis (100% and 100%, respectively).Zithromax has unique pharmacokinetics for efficacy in AOM. White blood cells act as delivery systems, taking Zithromax to the site of infection. Zithromax concentrates more highly in neutrophils and monocytes than in serum and is taken directly to the site of infection.** Infection-site concentrations of Zithromax decline very slowly, remaining at therapeutic levels several days posttherapy. This persistence at the site of infection allows for its uniquely convenient dosing regimen.Single dose Zithromax at 30 mg/kg offers a tolerability profile that compares favorably with that of Augmentin*** with overall incidence rates of adverse events of 16.8% and 22.5%, respectively. The incidence of vomiting and diarrhea was also comparable between Zithromax and Augmentin (4.0% and 4.0%, and 6.4% and 12.7%, respectively). The rates of discontinuation due to treatment-related adverse events were 2.3% (n=4) in Zithromax patients and 4.0% (n=7) in Augmentin patients.Zithromax is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any macrolide antibiotic. If an allergic reaction occurs, the drug should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted. Physicians should be aware that reappearance of the allergic symptoms may occur when symptomatic therapy for the allergic reaction is discontinued.Pseudomembranous colitis has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents. It is important to consider this diagnosis in patients who present with diarrhea.*Clinical success was defined as cure + improvement.**High tissue concentrations should not be interpreted to be quantitatively related to efficacy.***The most common side effects of Single Dose Zithromax are diarrhea/loose stools (4.3%), vomiting (4.9%), abdominal pain (1.4%), rash (1.0%), and nausea (1.0%).Zithromax (Azithromycin) Patient InformationDoes any of this happen in your home?Your child has been crying all nightWon’t eatWakes up every hour or twoRuns a feverPulls at his or her earsIf so, your child may have an ear infection. Bacteria often cause this problem. Antibiotics may help, but sometimes they don’t.You play a big role in getting your child well. The more you know about ear infections, the better you can fight them. What causes an ear infection? An ear infection (also known as otitis media) begins when fluid builds up in the middle ear. (The middle ear is the space just behind the eardrum.) When this fluid does not drain from the middle ear as it should, bacteria often grow. These bacteria can cause an ear infection. Why does my child keep getting them?Your child can’t catch an ear infection from another child.BUT, if your child catches a cold from anotherchild, the cold can lead to an ear infection. That’s why children in day care or school get them a lot. I think my child has an ear infection. What should I do?If you think your child has an ear infection, call your doctor.Your doctor may write a prescription for an antibiotic. But don’t push for one, because sometimes it is not needed. Let your doctor decide. Can ear infections cause hearing loss or speech problems? Ear infections can sometimes create a brief hearing loss. This is because fluid builds up in the middle ear. Children learn to speak by hearing others, so an infection may result in speech and language delays. What are antibiotics? How do they work?Antibiotics are medicines that kill bacteria. They can also stop bacteria from growing.Your doctor will decide if your child needs an antibiotic. And if your child needs it, your doctor will decide which antibiotic is the right one.Are antibiotics good for fighting colds? No! They don’t work against colds or the flu. VIRUSES cause colds and the flu. Antibiotics treat BACTERIAL infections.Your doctor can tell the difference. My child feels better.Does she need to take the rest of the doses?Yes! Your child may start to feel better before all of the medicine doses have been taken. But the medicine is still working. If you stop early, the infection might not be gone. Give your child ALL of the medicine your doctor tells you must be taken.
